Not a review of the content of this because I love George MacDonald but this is one of the most disappointing 'books' I have ever purchased at Amazon. It looks like someone printed it on their office copy machine. The text is miniscule, and it's faded at the edges on some pages. The paper and binding are horribly cheap and the photo on the front also looks like an extremely poor quality scan of a scan of a copy of a photograph. I don't know who put this together but I wish I had never purchased it. I guess this is what happens when something gets so old that it falls into the public domain and any yahoo can "publish" a book using someone else's content. Avoid at all costs.
I gave this book as a gift, but I have been reading my copy almost every day for about 15 years. George Macdonald is not known for his poetry, but he is known for his honest and pure commitment to Christ. You will relate to his writing with an intimacy that leaves you feeling better just knowing that someone else out there has been in your shoes. George Macdonald does not preach at you, he talks to God from a contrite heart, helping me enter into the Holy of Holies with boldness and an honest look at myself.
5-stars for MacDonald's beautiful poems. 1-star for the publisher's design of the physical book/binding. The publisher for the book I received is Bibliolife. The cover is unattractive and feels like a cheep knock-off. The binding is stiff and the spine is blank with no title or author info. I returned the hardcover and ordered the paperback, saving $20 and getting a nicer book cover and binding.To be clear, my complaint is with Bibliolife's tasteless packaging, not with MacDonald's poems. In future, I will stick with other publishers like Johannesen or Sunrise Books for hardcovers of George McDonald's classic works.
Got a chuckle about the Amazon questions about this book, like it is a mystery novel or a bodice ripper romance. This is a daily devotional of poems - one for each day of the year - written by George MacDonald. Short, one page, poems of Christian devotion. If you are into such things - as I am - this is a fine collection. I am thinking of another small book in a similar vein; Oswald Chambers "My Utmost for His Highest". If you like one, chances are you will like the other. Recommended.
One of the greatest examples of cogent writing I've ever seen. He could say more in seven lines than many can say in a book.
